Barretenberg is Aztec Labs' optimized C++ library implementing PLONK-family proving systems (including UltraPlonk and the Honk line of provers) along with the underlying elliptic curve and polynomial commitment machinery. It serves as the default proving backend for Noir programs via the ACIR interface and powers the Aztec network's private rollup. As a production cryptographic backend, its soundness directly determines the security of everything proven with Noir, and it has been the subject of multiple public audits commissioned by Aztec.
